We publish a statement written by the Union Syndicale Solidaires SUD Commerce & Services on occasion of the general and national strike taking place today 12th September all over France against Macron’s attack on workers’ rights and calling to take up the transnational challenge that can make the strike movement grow stronger in the next months, within and beyond France.

The strike movement takes back the French streets today with the national strike against Macron’s reform project of the labor code, which aims at concluding what was started last year with the loi travail in terms of attack to workers’ rights and general precarization. The bargaining power of workers and unions is going to be radically diminished by giving precedence to the negotiations at the level of the single firm; measures to safeguard the security in the workplaces are going to be erased; layouts will be easier than before. These are some of the transformations proposed by Macron’s ordinances. In line with the Europe wide attack on labor rights, the government is declaring war to French workers.
Today’s strike involves workers from public and private sectors. It is when we stop to work, when we go on strike that we demonstrate that society is ours, is of the workers and of all those that make it function on a daily basis, and not of the government, which could well be «en marche», but only at the service of the employers. Today can be the beginning of a wider movement of strikes and actions: if our strike grows stronger and stronger, it will be more difficult for the government to declare that it has the legitimacy to erase the labour code.
From France to Europe, towards a transnational social strike!
Last year the force of the strike movement against the loi travail and its world has produced unprecedented connections among sectors, among precarious and stable workers, migrants, activists and students: the strike has become social, reaching the entire society. That force is not over. This year we need to make a step forward in order for our struggle to gain more strength and endure the government’s hostility. We need to cross the French borders and establish transnational connections, in order to be able to attack effectively the European organization of exploitation of which Macron’s ordinances are just a part, that is all the measures enforced all over Europe aimed at weakening the power of workers by increasing precarity, lowering wages, cutting welfare services, restraining the mobility of migrants.
As Sud Commerce, we are today part of the strike of the workers of the commerce sector, such as Carrefour, LIDL and Amazon warehouse. The case of Amazon is telling of the need to expand the struggle on a transnational level, finding connections with workers from other countries. Amazon is using differences of wage, benefits and fiscal pressure across borders inEurope not only to make money, but also to blackmail workers, by switching flows in different hubs or transferring fulfilment centres in case they go on strike. The riders of Deliveroo, Foodora and Uber Eats face the same problems in their struggles. Only by establishing a solidarity across the borders we can aim at damaging the employers and counteract effectively the government’s ordinances.
For us it is possible and necessary to build a transnational social strike. We need to strengthen the existing connections and establish new ones to give force to the path towards a transnational social strike on a large scale!

Contre Macron et la loi travail XXL ! Faisons grève en France et en Europe !
Le mouvement de grève refait surface dans les rues françaises aujourd’hui contre le projet de loi travail XXL de Macron qui vise à compléter ce qui a été commencé l’année dernière avec la loi travail, en matière d’attaque contre les droits des travailleurs et de précarisation généralisée. Les moyens de négociation des travailleurs et des syndicats seront radicalement diminués en donnant une priorité aux discussions au niveau de l’entreprise ; les mesures visant à protéger la sécurité sur les lieux de travail vont être diminuées ; les licenciements seront « plus faciles ». Voici quelques-unes des transformations proposées par les ordonnances Macron, conformément à l’offensive qui existe en Europe contre les différentes législations du travail. Le gouvernement a donc déclaré la guerre aux travailleurs.
La grève d’aujourd’hui concerne les travailleurs des secteurs du public et du privé. C’est lorsque le travail s’arrête, que nous nous mettons en grève, que nous démontrons que la société est à nous, que c’est bien les travailleurs et tous ceux qui la font fonctionner quotidiennement, et non pas les gouvernements, qui eux sont « en marche », mais exclusivement au service des employeurs. Nous pensons que cela peut être le début d’un mouvement plus large de grèves et d’actions : si le mouvement s’élargi, il sera plus difficile pour le gouvernement de déclarer qu’il a la légitimité d’attaquer de nouveau le code du travail.
De la France à l’Europe, vers une grève sociale transnationale !
L’année dernière, la force du mouvement de grève contre la loi travail et son monde a tissé des liens inédits entre des secteurs, entre les travailleurs précaires et stables, les migrants, les militants et les étudiants : la grève était en train de devenir sociale. Nous pensons que cette force n’est pas dissoute. Cette fois ci, nous pensonsqu’il est possible d’aller de l’avant et d’établir également des liens transnationaux dans la lutte contre Macron qui est aussi une lutte contre l’organisation européenne de l’exploitation des travailleurs qui se reflète par les différentes conditions salariales entre les différents pays et dont les mesures du gouvernement français ne sont qu’une partie ; un gouvernement de l’exploitation et de « l’employabilité », visant à affaiblir les droits des travailleurs en augmentant la précarité, en abaissant les salaires, en réduisant les services sociaux, en réduisant la mobilité des migrants.
En tant que Sud Commerces et Services, syndicat membre de l’Union syndicale Solidaires, nous sommes partie prenante de la grève des travailleurs du secteur du commerce et de la logistique, comme Carrefour, LIDL et Amazon. Le cas particulier d’Amazon montre bien la nécessité d’étendre les liens avec des travailleurs d’autres pays afin d’être aussi plus efficace dans l’action. Amazon, compagnie transnationale utilise les différences de salaire, à son avantage ainsi que les différences entre les législations du travail et fiscales à travers les frontières en Europe non seulement pour gagner de l’argent, mais aussi comme instrument de chantage envers les travailleurs, en transférant par exemple les marchandises à livrer vers les entrepôts où la grève est presque impossible. Dans un autre contexte, les bikers de Deliveroo, Foodora et Uber Eats se situent dans un champ de lutte similaire. C’est donc aussi par la construction d’une solidarité à travers les frontières que nous serons plus efficaces pour lutter contre la logique du gouvernement Macron et ses ordonnances.
Ainsi, pour nous, construire une grève qui serait sociale et transnationale est nécessaire et possible. Des liens de solidarité et de contacts existent, nous pensons qu’ils peuvent être renforcés et s’élargir dans la perspective d’une grève sociale transnationale à grande échelle !
